3: Closed-source Roguelikes and Discovery

Most roguelikes are opensource but a few have done well closed source and preserving their mystery. To paraphrase something I read,
"There were many quests in development. When you got stuck advancing one you never knew if it wasn't developed or you just hadn't found the right path forward".

I think a similar effect could come from running a game on a server. Experimenting with tracking server state in https://github.com/QuantumProductions/exhume and https://github.com/QuantumProductions/ae has made me think more about this.

Updating the game "in the background" lets you craft an evolving world without any effort on the player's part and retaining the mystery so sought after as describe in
